British people are known, somewhat stereotypically, for a love of tea, fish and chips, and queuing.

They’re also known for their love of DIY projects. After all, why spend a bank holiday on a nice, sunny beach when you can turn your garage into a workshop?

In fact, Brits spent a staggering £110.3 billion on home improvements in the year 2021, with 77% of homeowners sprucing up their homes.

Perhaps you’re thinking now is the time to make some renovations of your own. If so, here are six tips for creating a modern home.

Create an open-plan floor plan

Traditionally, houses in the UK tend to have completely separate rooms – your kitchen, living, and dining areas are each their own room. A more modern approach is to have a design where spaces flow into each other.

For instance, your living areas would be open to each other to allow for natural light to spread more readily around the home. It also makes life easier if you are entertaining guests as the space does not feel quite as restricted.

Update your kitchen

Your kitchen is arguably the busiest and most sociable room in the house. Whether you’re preparing breakfast or cooking dinner, or maybe just catching up with family or friends over a cup of tea, you are going to be spending quite a significant amount of time in your kitchen so it is certainly a good idea to modernise this busy space with new cabinets and countertops.

Why not opt for a modern kitchen design such as white gloss or stone effect?

Clear clutter

The hustle and bustle of modern-day life where you have to juggle long working hours with family and social time means it is easy to allow clutter to build in the home.

Doing so can make rooms look busy and messy, so be specific with the type of storage you have to try and limit the number of items in a room. Keep the home clutter-free and store things out of sight, to allow free and easy navigation around the house.

Replace dated light fixtures

A further great way to modernise your home is to replace dated and traditional light fixtures. Replacing light fixtures will give a modern feel and can actually add value to your home. Have light fixtures spread evenly on walls and ceilings.

Decorate with art

You can make a real statement in modernising your home with some colourful and bold art choices. You don’t have to spend too lavishly to do so either, it’s more the arrangements that will bring a fresh feeling to your space. Your shelving can act as the display areas, and you can purchase matching items that don’t break the bank.

Be bold with colour

Finally, don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour to your rooms. Going for bold, vibrant colours can help relieve the effects of stress and anxiety, and boost your mood.
