Photographing the Klatch

Klatch Coffee

I am not a coffee drinker. At all. Although I love the smell, I have never enjoyed even the slightest hint of the flavor of it. I do, however, love coffee shops, especially the independently-owned smaller shops that seem to be ever fewer and further between. I love walking in and breathing that deep, roasted smell of the coffee beans, sitting down and watching the people go in and out. It’s usually the smaller shops where there is more of a sense of community, where everyone seems to know one another. People bring their computers and sit down to work for the morning, trying to escape the distractions of their offices or homes. I don’t have anything against Starbucks, but I’m very glad we do have an alternative around here. The Klatch has been a fixture in the Inland Empire for 20 years. Family-owned, it retains the charm and homeyness that seems to be lacking in the chain coffee places.

They bake almost all of their pastries in-house. The bars, scones, cinnamon rolls, and cookies are all made in the back so they are fresh and warm first thing in the morning. And, if you’re lucky enough to get there when they open, the smell is heavenly. Coffee (the Klatch also roasts their own beans), plus the waft of baked goods… could there be a better smell? Personally, my favorite is the cinnamon roll. Melt-in-your-mouth goodness. I hate getting cinnamon rolls that need to be heated up in order for them to have that “just out of the oven” taste. These do not. They are soft and gooey, with just enough frosting to balance out the cinnamon filling. I’ve come to realize one of the downsides of being a food photographer is that while I get to look at all of this wonderful food and maybe move it around the plate, eating it doesn’t happen. The challenge to me is finding (or making) the light helps make good food look like great food.

The best thing about the Klatch? They understand what being a part of the community means. Every month they display the work of a local artist. Whether it’s photography, painting, or mixed media, there is one space that is dedicated solely for that purpose. Also, on a regular basis, they will have an “Open Mic” night, as well as live music performances on the patio. Whether I  want to get some work done, get together with friends, or meet new ones, the Klatch is definitely my first choice. Are there places like this in your neighborhood?
